The Second week, we have NO FASTING on any day. The last week, on all days, we fast only from meat, but all other foods (cheese, eggs, etc) are allowed. There 4 Saturdays when the Dead are especially remembered during the Triodion period: Sat before Sunday of the Last Judgment (Meatfare) 2nd, 3rd and 4th Saturdays of Great Lent Commemoration of the Dead ?Saturday of Souls¦ Orthodox Christians should attend the Matins/Liturgy on Saturday to remember their departed loved ones. They submit their names before the liturgy, and these names are read aloud several times during the service. The Requiem matins is like a long Panikhida service. It features the reading of ?The Blameless¦ (Psalm 118) in 2 parts, similar to the funeral service. Everybody should come at least once to this service each year! Troparion for the departed, Tone VIII: O Thou Who by the depth of Thy wisdom dost provide all things out of love for man, / and grantest unto all that which is profitable, O only Creator: / Grant rest, O Lord, to the souls of Thy servants; // for in Thee have they placed their hope, O our Creator and Fashioner and God. Kontakion for the departed, Tone VIII, special melody: With the saints give rest, / O Christ, / to the souls of Thy servants, / where there is neither sickness, nor sorrow, / nor sighing, // but life everlasting. Fasting Cannibals. We must fast from sins as well as meat. If we only abstain from meat but not sin, we make ourselves to be more like the devil, who never eats. or perhaps, we are a "fasting cannibal" who refrains from meat, but devours his fellow man with judgment and anger and all sorts of other sins that proceed from the dark recesses of our hearts. ALL SERVICES: at our old location (3617 Abrams) until our new temple is built in McKinney (Apr or May, 2009) HYPERLINK "See Our Building Fund page: http://www.orthodox.net/aboutus/building-fund.html" See Our Building Fund page: http://www.orthodox.net/aboutus/building-fund.html for information on progress and to donate to our project. We are trying to raise $20,000 to finish the project properly.
