This setting of the divine liturgy is offered for the glory of God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit by all members of
his holy church. As it was in the church’s beginning, all believers are called upon to give worship. The
experience of communal worship as documented in scripture teaches us the centrality and bold power of such
worship.
After their release they went back to their own people and reported what the chief priests and elders had told them.
And when they heard it, they raised their voices to God with one accord and said, “Sovereign Lord, maker of heaven
and earth and the sea and all that is in them, you said by the holy Spirit through the mouth of our father David, your
servant: ‘Why did the Gentiles rage and the peoples entertain folly? The kings of the earth took their stand and the
princes gathered together against the Lord and against his anointed.’ Indeed they gathered in this city against your holy
servant Jesus whom you anointed, Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do
what your hand and (your) will had long ago planned to take place. And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and
enable your servants to speak your word with all boldness, as you stretch forth (your) hand to heal, and signs and
wonders are done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” As they prayed, the place where they were gathered
shook, and they were all filled with the holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

“The Church first of all is a worshipping community.” 2 While choirs have become the norm in most parishes,
we can look to the Divine Liturgy itself for proof that the words sung by these choirs are our words. Liturgy, by
design, is a “we” experience; for example: “Let us who mystically represent the Cherubim sing the thrice-holy
hymn,” “We have seen the true light,” “Let us give thanks to the Lord.” Consider the priest’s prayer before the
Holy, Holy, Holy: “It is fitting and right to sing to You, to bless You, to praise You, to give thanks to You, and
to worship You in every place of Your dominion….” The liturgy call us forth to actively give praise in song.
Collette Jonopulos says it best:
The sacred music offered to us through the church combines the truth of the gospel, the chants of tradition, and most
importantly, the Spirit of the Lord. Within our churches music reaches it zenith; we worship God with our voices lifted
in prayer. I have heard many priests call for congregational singing. Listening to the choir is wonderful, but being a
participant creates a heavenly choir of all believers. 3
May this Divine Liturgy help us give fitting praise and thanksgiving to the most Holy Trinity as we sing in chorus
with the heavenly host, the saints, and the church here and in all the world.

APPENDIX I
ARRANGER’S NOTES
The origins of this setting date to December 17, 1997. It was started as a possible liturgy to be used at
Holy Transfiguration Church in Livonia, Michigan. My original idea was to use Ukrainian chant of the Galician
tradition. However, I decided to base it on the Russian Obikhod, which was more familiar to those of the
Orthodox Church in America (especially those who come out of the original Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic
Church of America). I took my basic format from liturgy books for congregational singing similar to ones used
by the Carpatho-Rusin Churches of both Orthodox and Eastern-Rite Catholic jurisdictions. The first text used
was an adaptation of the 1967 translation of the Divine Liturgy approved by the Great Council of Bishops,
Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of America. This was used in the first draft, which I completed
August 1, 1998. Soon after, I received a text approved by Bishop Job of Chicago. I incorporated that text
into this setting.
The following norms have been used in this setting:
• For each part of the liturgy that is proper to the congregation, there is only one setting.
• All parts that the 1967 translation formerly labeled “Choir” are the congregation’s part.
• I took most of the music from Obikhod Notnago Penia, Sputnik Psalmschika, and ordinary Russian
chant. I used copies of the Obikhod Notnago Penia, and Sputnik Psalmschika and referred also to a
musical setting in English of the Divine Liturgy and the Octoechoes by the rassaphor-monk Laurence. I
believe this setting was set to the text used by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in 1982.
The creed uses a variation on the Kievan akathist melody. I also referred to the 1907 Uzhorod
Prostopinije.
• Generally, I chose the simpler of the melodies available to me. I have selected a combination of Kievan,
Znamenny and common chant. Throughout the Liturgy, I repeat the same melodies for “Lord, have mercy,”
“To You, O Lord,” “Amen,” and “To/With your Spirit” as much as possible.
• Music for ordinary Sunday and weekday usage and the resurrectional tones are found in the Divine Liturgy
Companion Book.
• I harmonized the music according to the following method. The melody specified by the Obikhod is the alto
line. I harmonized the soprano and alto in thirds. The bass generally imitates the alto an octave lower. I
arranged the tenor according to the meaning of the Latin term. Tenor comes from the verb tenire, which
means “to hold.” Thus tenor is a Latin noun meaning a held course. As such, the tenor has the most
constant notes, providing a kind of cantus firmus.
• All harmonies are generally parallel. This music is not polyphony; rather, it is parallel harmonized chant.
• This setting is intended for congregational usage. Therefore, I have put the priest and deacon parts in a
smaller, italic font.
• All music is in the key of G. One can sing it in any key. G is easy to write in and is in the basic range of
most people. The assumption in this style is that G can be assigned to any note. G is simply the root note.
The root note should be what the priest or deacon is singing. Many priests and deacons generally sing a
root note that is between C and F below middle C. This music will work if sung starting relative to these
notes.
I transcribed and arranged the music in Music Time Deluxe for Windows. I then converted text and music into
PDF format. I claim no particular right to this music. I have attempted to not duplicate others’ works or use
other arranger’s music without permission. I am not sure how successfully I have done this. I did occasionally

refer to hand-written musical settings I found in the library of Holy Transfiguration church and compared my
settings of the tones to Bakhmetev’s settings of the eight tones. Listed below are the various hymns and
responses found in this setting with their type or source and any notations on how they have deviated from the
original music or how I adapted them in this setting.

phrases. In the akathist hymn, the resolution to this comes with the refrain “Rejoice, O unwedded
Bride.” In the creed a special ending is used in which it resolves to a G major chord on the word,
Amen.
THE ANAPHORA:
The seven parts of the anaphora (Mercy of Peace, And with your Spirit, We Lift Them Up, It is
Meet and Right, Thrice Holy, Amen, and We Praise You) are from the Number One Mercy of Peace
from the Obikhod, Kievan chant.
